Chasing targets in white-ball cricket has been the way to go in the modern era, but the equation does tend to change when it comes to high-stakes matches in the ODI World Cup, where each point and result counts. Under pressure, even meagre totals have a tendency to be amplified, and teams are known to crumble in such circumstances.
As a result, there is a massive difference when it comes to the highest run chases in ODI cricket in general, compared to the ones achieved in World Cups. Prior to their 2025 ODI Women's World Cup semi-final masterclass, the Women in Blue had only chased over 200 only once in the tournament's history.
On that note, let us take a look at the top five successful run-chases for India in ODI World Cups across men’s and women’s.
#1 341-5 (India vs Australia, 2025 Women's ODI World Cup semi-final; DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai )
The Indian women's team scripted history by recording one of the greatest run chase ever, let alone in a World Cup knockout fixture. The Women in Blue were arguably out of the scheme of things after conceding 338 in the first innings, and losing their star batter, Smriti Mandhana, early on in the run chase.
However, a record partnership by Jemimah Rodrigues and Harmanpreet Kaur brought India back into the contest. Although the skipper's dismissal, followed by Deepti Sharma's run out, left the team in a shaky state, Rodrigues anchored the run chase right till the end, aided by valuable cameos by Richa Ghosh and Amanjot Kaur.
#2 288-4 (India vs Zimbabwe, 2015 Men's ODI World Cup, Eden Park, Auckland)
The men's team highest run chase in an ODI World Cup came during the league stage of the 2015 edition. Brendan Taylor's sublime ton guided Zimbabwe to a competitive score of 287, while the Indian top order collapsed to leave the team reeling at 92-4 in the 23rd over.
Zimbabwe were on the cusp of causing a major upset, but were hindered by the middle-order pair of Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni. The pair put on an unbeaten 196-run partnership for the fifth wicket to guide India home with eight balls to spare. Raina recorded a memorable hundred, finishing with 110 runs off 104 balls, while the skipper posted a sublime 85 off 76 deliveries.
#3 275-4 (India vs Sri Lanka, 2011 Men's ODI World Cup Final, Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai)
One of the most memorable matches in Indian history comes in the form of a record chase when the team hunted down a 275-run target under pressure to end a 28-year-old wait for an ODI World Cup. Wins by chasing in ODI World Cup Finals was a rarity back then, and India were certainly on the back foot after losing both Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar in the run chase.
Virat Kohli's cameo stabilized the innings, while Gautam Gambhir and MS Dhoni took the run chase forward with a sublime partnership to dominate the middle overs. The left-handed batter narrowly missed out on a ton after being castled for 97, while the skipper ended with an unbeaten 91, wrapping the proceedings with a six as well.
#4 274-6 (India vs New Zealand, 2023 Men's ODI World Cup, HPCA Stadium, Dharamshala)
Team India have had a poor record against New Zealand in ICC events, but all of it changed with the 2023 ODI World Cup. During a crucial league stage game in Dharamshala, the Men in Blue came in with a tweaked combination after Hardik Pandya's injury.
Mohammad Shami, on return, starred with a five-wicket haul, to restrict New Zealand to 273. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill handed India a flying start while Virat Kohli anchored the innings later on in typical fashion to control the run chase. Despite a few nervy moments, India were able to get over the line with a couple of overs to spare to continue their unbeaten run in the tournament.
#5 276-4 (India vs Pakistan, 2003 Men's ODI World Cup, SuperSport Park, Centurion)
India's new-look ODI squad under Sourav Ganguly's reign were up against Pakistan's veterans during the 2003 ODI World Cup in South Africa. The Men in Green were able to post a competitive score of 273-7, courtesy of Saeed Anwar's century.
Sachin Tendulkar led the way in the run chase with one of his greatest knocks, which began with an onslaught with Virender Sehwag on the legendary Pakistani bowlers in the powerplay. Pakistan were able to claw their way back into the contest with a few contests, but a composed partnership by the middle order pair of Rahul Dravid and Yuvraj Singh, building from the top-order's exploits, were able to hunt the score down with more than four overs to spare.
