Former Indian opener Sadagoppan Ramesh slammed head coach Gautam Gambhir after the side's disastrous 0-2 home Test series defeat to South Africa. After losing a thrilling opening Test in Kolkata, the hosts went down tamely in the second Test at Guwahati by 408 runs - their worst margin of defeat in Tests. It was India's second home Test series whitewash under Gambhir in just over a year after their 0-3 drubbing to New Zealand last year. India had not lost a home Test series in over a decade from 2013 before Gambhir took over as head coach in the middle of last year.Talking about Gautam Gambhir's coaching credentials after the South African series, Ramesh said on his YouTube channel:"You said even star players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma must play domestic cricket to be considered for selection. Yet, you've never even coached a state team or Agarkar hasn't even been a state selector. So it's like one logic for you and something else for others."He continued:"After losing the last match, you said this is an inexperienced side. But you were the one who didn't want the experienced players and put them under pressure to push them out. In the post-match press conference, he said everyone should be blamed, including me. This is where Rahul Dravid was different. He said the blame should be only on me and only the praise should go to the team."The series loss to South Africa relegated India to fifth in the 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle and a win percentage below 50."As a coach, you stand up and take the blame for them" - Sadagoppan RameshSadagoppan Ramesh believes Gautam Gambhir should have taken the blame solely on himself instead of sharing the criticisms after the South African debacle. The Indian head coach stated in the post-match press conference that everyone involved in the system deserved blame for the series defeat against the Proteas."There is no doubt that the players are at fault too. But this is where as a coach you stand up and take the blame for them. If you say something like that, the players will give it their life while playing for you," said Ramesh (via the aforementioned source). He concluded:"Even if Suryakumar Yadav had dropped that catch in the T20 World Cup final and India had lost, Rohit Sharma would have not said a word on India losing because Suryakumar Yadav dropped the catch. That's when a team will start gravitating towards a captain and a coach."India has now lost three out of their six Test series under Gambhir, including two out of three at home.
