Former South African all-rounder Shaun Pollock believes the differences in pressure between the IPL and international cricket have played a crucial role in Shubman Gill's struggles in T20Is. Pollock's remarks came after the Indian vice-captain registered another low score of four in the T20I series opener against South Africa in Cuttack.

Gill has struggled for form since his return to the Indian T20I side for the 2025 Asia Cup. The 26-year-old has averaged an underwhelming 26.30 in 13 T20Is with no half-centuries in this period.

Opening up on Gill's continued struggles in T20Is, Pollock said on Cricbuzz (18:01):

"You think of how well they play in the IPL. But there is no real pressure on you because you are one of the main players. You're never going to be even considered to be dropped no matter how you go. And then you get into the Indian side, where there is real competition for places. It creates just a little bit of a different mindset and a different dilemma. You know you're not secure if you don't produce."

Pollock continued:

"But Shubman Gill, maybe he feels a little bit of the expectations. He's probably disappointed himself that he hasn't been able to get a decent score. He's a far better player than that. He should be getting fifties every three or four knocks that he plays. So it's just an extra thing that's put on your mind that if you don't produce, you might actually not play, which is never the case when you play in the IPL."

Gill's return to the side broke a hugely successful opening partnership between Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson. Furthermore, other youngsters, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad, among others, continue to remain sidelined despite boasting better T20I numbers than Gill.

Shubman Gill has been in stellar batting form in the IPL

While his struggles in T20Is have seemingly lasted forever, Shubman Gill has been among the most prolific IPL batters over the past few years. The right-hander enjoyed an excellent IPL 2025 season, finishing with 650 runs at an average of 50 and a strike rate of almost 156 in 15 outings.

Gill also won the Orange Cap in the 2023 IPL season, scoring a remarkable 890 runs with three centuries. The 26-year-old has scored at least 400 runs in each of his last six IPL seasons.

Yet, that form hasn't translated to T20Is, with the Indian vice-captain averaging a sub-par 29 at a strike rate of a tick over 140 in 34 matches.
