The Women's Premier League (WPL) franchises unveiled their list of retentions on Thursday, November 6, ahead of the WPL 2026 mega-auction, scheduled for November 27. The culmination of the three-year cycle allows certain teams to conduct their transition and rebuild, while other franchises have an opportunity for a fresh start with a revamp.
According to the guidelines, franchises were handed an overall purse of INR 15 crore, and a provision to retain a maximum of five players. The underlying conditions and limit stated that only a maximum of three capped Indian players, two overseas players, and two uncapped Indian players were permitted.
Mumbai Indians (MI) and the Delhi Capitals (DC) were the only two teams to retain the maximum of five players. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) retained four players, the Gujarat Giants (GG) retained two players, while the UP Warriorz (UPW) retained just one player.
Each retention reduces the purse amount, which means that the franchises havea different amount to splurge at the auction table to construct their new-look squad.

WPL 2026 Mega Auction to be held in Delhi on November 27
Early reports suggest that the capital city is set to play host to the WPL 2026 mega auction. Goa was reportedly in contention to host the event, but it was Delhi who bagged the rights in the end.
The mega auction is expected to be a one-day event as the franchises will look to spend the remaining purse wisely to build a squad around their core. The teams who have not used their maximum quota of five retentions have the provision of using their Right to Match (RTM) Cards as well.
