Washington Sundar was ignored as India captain KL Rahul confirmed the only change for the Men in Blue in the third and final ODI against South Africa in Vizag on Saturday, December 6. Tilak Varma has replaced the all-rounder in the playing XI.

At the toss, Rahul said (via Cricbuzz):

“One change. Washington (Sundar) misses out, Tilak (Varma) comes in.”

The change came after Sundar failed to make an impact in the first two ODIs, returning wicketless. With the bat, he returned with scores of 13 and 1, respectively.

Meanwhile, Tilak Varma is making his comeback to the playing XI for the first time after December 2023. He smashed 52 in his last game against the Proteas. Overall, he has managed 68 runs in four matches.

The 23-year-old enjoys a promising record in List-A cricket, scoring 1724 runs in 44 games at an average of 45.36, including five tons and 10 half-centuries. The Hyderabad-born player will look to make the most of the opportunity and gear up for the five-match T20I series against the same opposition, which begins on December 9.

Tilak Varma replaces Washington Sundar after India opt to bowl and break their toss losing streak

Tilak Varma was the only change as KL Rahul helped India break their 20-match losing streak. Justifying his decision to bowl first, the skipper said (via Cricbuzz):

“We'll bowl. We trained here last night, and the feedback from the coaches was that there was dew, but it didn't come in as early as Ranchi and Raipur. We were obviously planning to bowl second, keeping our track record in mind. I don't think it's going to play such a big part like Raipur and Ranchi. But, we just want to change the total and see how we can bowl first.”

The decision came after the Men in Blue failed to defend 359 in the second ODI in Raipur, where the Proteas won by four wickets to level the three-match series 1-1. Earlier, India won the series opener by 17 runs.

The Temba Bavuma-led South Africa have made two changes. Ottneil Baartman and Ryan Rickelton replaced injured players Nandre Burger and Tony de Zorzi, respectively, in the playing XI.
