Team India will be without the services of Shubman Gill, not only for the first ODI against South Africa, but for the whole series. Having been appointed captain of the ODI team recently, the 26-year-old will miss the series due to a neck spasm sustained during the Kolkata Test of the series against South Africa.
Gill walked off the field after playing just three deliveries of the Test with the team doctor and did not return for the rest of the match. Gill was later taken to a hospital but was discharged following the Kolkata Test. The injury eventually ruled him out of the second and final Test in Guwahati, propelling Rishabh Pant to step up as captain.
As for the ODI series, KL Rahul will take over as captain, with full-time vice-captain Shreyas Iyer also nursing a rib injury.
"He is recovering well" - Morne Morkel on Shubman Gill

Speaking at a presser before the first ODI, India's bowling coach Morne Morkel revealed that Gill's recovery was on track. The former South Africa pacer said, as quoted by ESPN Cricinfo:
"I think the best is for the medical [team] to give that [update]. I spoke to Shubman two days ago just to check in with him and he is recovering well. So, that is pleasing to hear."
The Men in Blue will be keen to regain some pride against the Proteas after suffering a humiliating loss in the preceding two-Test series. This was India's second clean sweep at home against South Africa, who won in the sub-continent nation after 25 years. India and South Africa will also lock horns in three T20Is following the 50-overs leg.
