After being asked to bat first, India got off to a brisk start, reaching 40 in 4.5 overs before Rohit Sharma (14) perished after hitting a couple of boundaries. Yashasvi Jaiswal (22) also departed in the 9th over without converting his start, leaving the hosts at 62/2 in 9.4 overs.

Ruturaj Gaikwad (105) and Virat Kohli (102) then stitched a sublime 195-run partnership for the third wicket to set a great platform for their side. Captain KL Rahul (66*) utilized it and hit a fine half-century to take the hosts to 358 in 50 overs. Ravindra Jadeja failed to provide finishing touches as he remained unbeaten on 24 (27) at the end.

"I'll just bat according to the situation" - Ruturaj Gaikwad after a century in 1st innings of 2nd IND vs SA ODI 2025

Speaking during the mid-innings break, Indian batter Ruturaj Gaikwad reflected on his batting performance, saying:

"Pleased with the effort, missed out on the knock last game, it was a good wicket there too. Conditions suited for me here, gutted last game, but thankfully it came out this game. Went out to bat in the 11th over, told myself, I'll just bat according to the situation, rotate the strike. It was two paced in the first twenty overs, but as I played more, it became easy."

On his partnership with Virat Kohli, Gaikwad added:

"Dream to bat with Virat, wonderful partnership, how to assess gaps, how to adjust techniques, very helpful, good learning for me. We kept thinking about just five overs, small targets. Once we felt we were comfortable, there was a phase where the ball wasn't doing much, I backed my instincts. It's a good score, there's lot of dew, but hopefully less dew tonight and will be tough to chase this total."
