Team India's star batter Virat Kohli extended his purple patch with a sublime century in the second ODI of the three-match series against South Africa on Wednesday, December 3. However, his heroics went in vain as the Proteas secured a famous four-wicket victory at Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium, Raipur.
After India were put to bat first, Kohli scored 102 runs off 93 deliveries, playing a major role in the Men in Blue posting a daunting 358-run total. South Africa overhauled the target in 49.2 overs, recording the joint-highest successful ODI run chase against India.
Notably, it was after 2,642 days that a Kohli century ended in a losing cause for India. The last time the side lost an international game despite the former captain's ton was March 8, 2019.
The veteran batter scored a brilliant 123-run knock from 95 balls at JSCA International Stadium Complex, Ranchi, in the third ODI of the five-match home series against Australia. The hosts failed to chase the 314-run target in spite of the effort, getting bowled out for 281.
India have now lost a total of 15 matches when Kohli has hit a ton. Out of his 53 ODI tons, the Men in Blue have ended up on the losing side eight times.
The 37-year-old has 84 centuries to his name in international cricket, the second-highest in the game's history. He is only behind Indian batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar, who, with 100 centuries, holds the astonishing record of most international hundreds.
Meanwhile, Kohli has struck back-to-back hundreds in the ongoing series. The series currently stands leveled at 1-1, making the remaining third clash a deciding fixture. The match will be played at Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, Visakhapatnam, on Saturday, December 6.

Ruturaj Gaikwad also delivered an excellent batting performance for India. The right-handed batter notched up his maiden ODI century, scoring 105 runs from 83 deliveries.
Captain KL Rahul played an impactful knock at the back end of the innings, remaining unbeaten on 66 off 43 balls. The visitors came out all guns blazing in the chase, with opener Aiden Markram playing a crucial role in the victory.
He scored 110 runs in 98 balls and was adjudged the Player of the Match. Matthew Breetzke (68 off 64) and Dewald Brevis (54 off 34) also did a commendable job, while Corbin Bosch (29* off 15) chipped in with a quick-fire cameo.
