The last time India had to follow-on at home before the ongoing second Test against South Africa was in 2010 in Nagpur. Interestingly, it was against the same opposition.
Battting first, South Africa had posted a mammoth total of 558/6 declared. Hashim Amla struck an unbeaten double ton, making 253* off 473 balls. Jacques Kallis also scored a huge hundred, making 173 runs off 351 balls. They then bowled the opponents out for 233 in 64.4 overs in the first innings, leading by 325 runs.
Virender Sehwag scored a century, making 109 runs off 139 balls. Subramaniam Badrinath struck a half-century (56 off 139) while no other batters made a significant contribution. South Africa enforced the follow-on as the hosts had to bat once again.
In the second essay, the hosts put up an improved effort, getting to 319. Sachin Tendulkar scored a hundred (100 off 179 balls). However, it was not enough as they fell short with South Africa winning by an innings and six runs.
Visiting teams enforced a follow-on on India in India only two other times (New Zealand in 2003 and Australia in 2001) before the 2010 Test against South Africa.
No follow-on enforced by South Africa on India in the second Test
In the ongoing second Test in Guwahati, South Africa batted first and posted a solid total of 489 on the board. Senuran Muthusamy stood with an exceptional century (109) while Marco Jansen scored a vital 93.
In reply, India struggled with their batting. The hosts were bundled out for 201 in 83.5 overs on the third day. Yashasvi Jaiswal struck a half-century (58) while Washington Sundar (48) made a key contribution towards the backend.
South Africa, leading by 289 runs, had the option to make the hosts bat again and enforce the follow-on. Surprisingly, Proteas skipper Temba Bavuma decided against enforcing the follow-on. Therefore, the visitors will walk out to bat once again in this game.
They will aim to build on their lead and set the hosts a huge target in the final innings. Having won the first Test in Kolkata, South Africa are well on track to complete a 2-0 series whitewash and create history.
