Team India ace batter Virat Kohli has overtaken ODI skipper Shubman Gill to claim the fourth spot in the latest update of ICC Rankings for Batters ahead of the second match against South Africa in Raipur. The veteran player recently struck his 52nd ODI hundred in the series opener in Ranchi to increase his rating to 751, and go past the injured Gill.
After a tricky tour of Australia, Virat Kohli was at his absolute best on home turf to strike 135 runs off 120 deliveries in India's 17-run win over the Proteas. The No.3 batter was in sublime touch, recording seven sixes in his match-winning knock to make a massive statement amid questions surrounding his future.
Shubman Gill had suffered a drop in the rankings after a difficult series against Australia, where he scored only 43 runs in three innings. To make matters worse, he was ruled out of the ongoing home ODI series against South Africa after suffering a neck injury during the preceding two-match Test series.
Team India stand-in skipper and wicket-keeper, KL Rahul, also moves two spots up to 14th after his crucial fifty as a finisher in the first ODI. He struck 60 runs off 56 deliveries while batting at No.6 to help the side post 349-8 in the first innings.
Rohit Sharma holds top spot after fifty in IND vs SA 2025 1st ODI
As far as the top of the rankings is concerned, Rohit Sharma cements his place after recently becoming the oldest player to hold the spot. The Hitman, after his brilliant set of outings in the Australia tour, carried the form into the home season as well. He struck a crucial fifty in the first ODI in Ranchi, before being dismissed in an unlucky fashion.
Rohit Sharma currently has a rating of 783, gaining a slender lead over the second-ranked Daryl Mitchell from New Zealand. The former skipper was briefly overthrown from the top spot, but managed to regain it soon after.
At the time of writing, he is batting alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal in the second ODI against the Proteas after India were put into bat yet again.
