Former South African all-rounder Shaun Pollock criticized the Eden Gardens wicket after Day 2 of the opening India-South Africa Test. Both teams have struggled with the bat over the course of the first two days, resulting in 26 wickets in just over 152 overs.

While the Proteas were dismissed for 159 in their first innings, the hosts fared only slightly better with 189 in their first essay. South Africa's batting woes have continued in their second innings as they are reeling at 93/7 at the end of the second day.

Talking about the Kolkata wicket after play on Day 2, Pollock said on Cricbuzz (13:55):

"If the surface would have started doing what it's doing already at the end of Day 3 or start of Day 4, I would have been happy. It's been too much on the first two days and too spicy for me. I don't mind a pitch if it offers assistance and players' techniques are found out or their plans are not appropriate and they get themselves out."

He continued:

"But when someone works out a game plan and sticks to it and still gets an unplayable delivery, that's when I am not overly happy. I understand the nature of the pitch and when you pick four spinners, you obviously want to back it and give it such a surface. But I would prefer if it would happen at the end of Day 3 or Day 4."

Both spinners and pacers have enjoyed the uneven bounce and massive deviation off the surface, with the Test match likely to finish in under three days.

"If you are just going to be a sitting duck, you invariably get a good ball" - Shaun Pollock

Shaun Pollock cut the Indian batters some slack despite their sub-par display on Day 2 of the opening Test at Kolkata. The former captain believes the surface played a bigger role in the Indian batters' dismissals than the poor application.

"If you are just going to be a sitting duck and just wait and wait, without trying to apply some pressure, you invariably get a good ball. That's why I think their approach was good eventually. Initially, they were very selective and South Africa didn't apply the pressure too well," said Pollock (via the aforementioned source).

He added:

"But it was the nature of the pitch. I don't think you were ever really in. It's why when you look at the dismissals of the Indian batters, I wouldn't be overly concerned with the way they got out. There were some good deliveries, especially the Rishabh Pant one."

Pollock believes Rishabh Pant's dismissal proved costly for India, saying:

"He (Pant) was the key as he was flying. He was the one who could have taken it away from South Africa. So I don't think they'll be too upset. It is always going to be difficult for the guys at the bottom to survive on this surface. As a tailender, when your top batters can barely survive, how are you going to do the job."

Pant raced to 27 off 23 deliveries with two boundaries and as many maximums before receiving a brute of a delivery from Corbin Bosch.
