Former Indian opener Sadagoppan Ramesh expressed surprise at the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) signing two uncapped players, Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma, for ₹14.2 crore each at the IPL 2026 auction. The duo were the third and fourth highest buys at the auction and set the record for the most expensive signings among uncapped players in IPL history. The Men in Yellow endured a torrid 2025 season, finishing at the bottom of the standings. CSK have also missed the playoffs in back-to-back seasons, following their title run in 2023.Talking about CSK's massive plunge on the two uncapped players, Ramesh said on his YouTube channel:"CSK have crowned these two youngsters despite them being uncapped. They've picked Prashant Veer with the belief that he'll be the replacement for Ravindra Jadeja. Likewise, Kartik Sharma for the finishing role. Before, performing well in the IPL used to be rewarding. But now, just playing in the IPL is rewarding. Such is the gamble franchises are willing to take. But IPL is a forest, and only time will tell if these two are tigers or just kittens."Ramesh also spoke about big signings historically backfiring on CSK, saying:CSK have never benefitted from big-money buys like Ben Stokes, Daryll Mitchell or Deepak Chahar. So it'll be great even if CSK gains rewards from one of these two buys. They've also invested in Rahul Chahar. His brother Deepak Chahar let CSK down, often being injured. It remains to be seen if Rahul Chahar plays and performs.Rahul Chahar was CSK's third-highest signing in the 2026 auction at ₹5.20 crore. The franchise entered the auction with the second-highest purse of ₹43.40 crore."Do you really need a fourth wicketkeeper batter?" - Sadagoppan Ramesh on Kartik Sharma's signing at IPL 2026 auctionSadagoppan Ramesh questioned CSK's signing of uncapped wicketkeeper-batter Kartik Sharma, considering the presence of other glovemen, Sanju Samson, MS Dhoni, and Urvil Patel. The 19-year-old has been in red-hot form in domestic cricket across all three formats."There is a question mark on whether CSK should have gone after both these young players instead of one. It's a massive gamble. Kartik Sharma is a wicketkeeper-batter. But when you already have three wicketkeepers in Dhoni, Samson, and Urvil Patel, do you really need a fourth wicketkeeper batter? Else if you've picked him just as a finisher, you could have gone for someone like David Miller, who went for just 2 crore," said Ramesh (via the aforementioned source).Kartik Sharma is coming off a reasonable 2025-26 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy campaign, averaging 26.60 at an average of 160.24 in five outings.
