Former Team India batting coach Sanjay Bangar claimed that Kolkata Knight Riders' (KKR) decision to release star all-rounder Andre Russell ahead of IPL 2026 auction didn't surprise him. Bangar said there were signs, given the veteran West Indian was going underused both as a batter and bowler last season. The three-time champions have let go of Russell, Venkatesh Iyer, Moeen Ali, Quinton de Kock, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Anrich Nortje, Spencer Johnson, Chetan Sakariya and Luvnith Sisodiya. Leg-spinner Mayank Markande was traded to the Mumbai Indians. Russell's release came as a massive shock as he has been one of their first-choice players in the XI consistently since joining the franchise in 2014. However, the Jamaican struggled in IPL 2025, averaging 18.55 with the bat and 27.12 as a bowler. When asked whether he was surprised, the former Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) coach told ESPN Cricinfo:"Not really, because the signs were there. KKR were probably not utilising the services of Russell, the batter because most times he batted lower down the order. Also, his usage as the bowler - because he hardly bowled his entire quota of four overs in many of the matches he played in the last season. So, there were signs that maybe Russell will have to ply his trade for another franchise."Russell is also the second-highest run-getter for the Knight Riders, mustering 2658 runs in 139 games at a strike rate of 175.09 with a best of 88. He also won the Most Valuable Player of the season award twice.
