Star India batter KL Rahul opened up about a cheeky conversation with England legend Kevin Pietersen's wife during their recent tour. India toured England for a five-match Test series earlier this year.
Notably, Pietersen served as the mentor for Delhi Capitals (DC) in IPL 2025. KL Rahul also played for DC this season, and the duo shared fun banter throughout the tournament. Pietersen went on a vacation to the Maldives midway through the season. Before a game, Rahul roasted him with his comment that a mentor went to the Maldives for two weeks mid-season.
Reacting to his funny and viral comment, KL Rahul opened up on the banter between the two. He revealed how his wife, Athiya Shetty, questioned him for being mean to Pietersen. Later on, when the Indian team was in England for the Test series, the star batter cheekily complained to Pietersen's wife.
Rahul said:
"Our banter is different. He is a great sport. He gives it to you also. There was this video, and there were two-three times where I said something and DC posted it on the Insta page. So, my wife was telling me, 'Why are you being so mean? He is such a sweet guy.' I said, 'Half the things that he does to me and tells me, that doesn't come out.' This is three times that I have given out of the 100 times he is after my life. I complained to his wife when we were in UK. They invited me for dinner and I told, 'Tell your husband to go easy on me. He is very rude to me.'" (via 2 Sloggers YouTube channel)
Rahul had a successful series with the bat in England. He scored 532 runs from 10 innings with two hundreds and as many fifties. Since 2023, the right-hander has been in impressive form across formats (international and IPL).
KL Rahul on his crestfallen reaction during 2023 World Cup match against Australia
Going back to 2023, KL Rahul played a key role in India's run to the final of the ODI World Cup. During a league game against Australia in Chennai, he played a fabulous knock, scoring a match-winning, unbeaten 97 off 115 balls.
In the match, India were chasing 200 and needed five runs more to win when Rahul was batting on 91. They had enough overs and six wickets remaining, and thus he wanted to try and score a century as the game was as good as over. Attempting to hit a boundary, he ended up scoring a six and was stranded on 97* as the hosts won the match.
After hitting the shot, he appeared crestfallen. He revealed that it was not a celebration, but he was looking at the ball in shock, thinking how he had hit it so well. He was questioned for thinking about his century and being selfish by many fans. However, KL Rahul justified himself.
"It's not a celebration, it's a shock that how did I hit it so well. I saw someone had commented that we won that match, but so selfish of him to be concerned about his 100. Winning the match is the most important thing, and all of us do that. But if you get to a situation where winning is inevitable, you need five runs and there are six wickets in hand, with a lot of overs remaining. I think me or any player in that scenario, if he has worked hard, deserves to try to get to a milestone if it's possible, and that is what I was calculating. I tried to hit it for a four. We needed five runs. So, if I hit a four and then I hit a six, I could have gotten to that hundred. Who doesn't want a World Cup hundred?" he said.
KL Rahul made 452 runs from 10 innings in that World Cup at an average of 75.33 with a hundred and two half-centuries. Unfortunately, India ended up losing the final.
