A maximum of five players can be retained by the Women's Premier League (WPL) franchises ahead of the upcoming 2026 auction. According to the governing council, the five franchises can use direct retention or Right to Match (RTM) options, as reported by Cricbuzz on Monday, November 3.

As per the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)'s guidelines, a franchise can retain a maximum of three capped Indian players and two foreign players. If a team retains a maximum of five players, one of them should be an uncapped player, the report added.

Notably, the maximum purse allotted to each team to rebuild the 2026 squad is ₹15 crore. The players will be valued under slabs of ₹3.5 crore, ₹2.5 crore, ₹1.75 crore, ₹1 crore, and ₹50 lakh (uncapped player) from one to five, respectively.

If a franchise retains five players, ₹9.25 crore would be deducted from the total purse, leaving them with ₹5.75 crore at the WPL 2026 auction.

The deadline day for the franchises to submit their retention lists is November 5. The last day for player registration is November 18, while the final list of players will be released on November 20. Notably, the WPL 2026 auction is likely to be held in the last week of November.
