Team India captain Suryakumar Yadav's poor form in the shortest format continued as he was dismissed for 12 by Lungi Ngidi immediately after hitting a six and a four in the first of the five T20Is against South Africa in Cuttack. The right-handed batter became Ngidi's second wicket of the innings as the hosts were rocked early.

The dismissal came in the third over of the innings, with Surya flicking the second delivery of the over saw the veteran batter flick the ball over square leg for a boundary. He followed it up with the supla shot, effortlessly sending it way over the square leg boundary. However, Ngidi came back strongly by bowling the correct length. The Indian captain tried to chip the ball away but only got a leading edge to Aiden Markram at mid-on.

Suryakumar hasn't scored a T20I half-century since October 2024, with his highest score in the format since being 47. The Indian skipper will need to find form quickly, with the T20 World Cup slated to begin on February 7.

Meanwhile, right-arm seamer Lutho Sipamla picked the third wicket of the innings as he got the better of the dangerous Abhishek Sharma. Although Sipamla missed his line and Abhishek tried to nudge it to the fine-leg boundary, Marco Jansen intercepted it extremely well to take a blinder after covering significant ground.

Earlier, South African captain Aiden Markram had won the toss and opted to bowl first, citing the dew factor. At the time of writing, the Men in Blue were 71/3 in 10 overs, with Tilak Varma and Axar Patel at the crease.

South Africa clinched the Test series, while India won the 50-overs leg of the tour.
