Australian skipper Steve Smith pulled off a one-handed screamer on Day 4 of the Ashes 2025-26 second Test at the Gabba in Brisbane as the hosts broke the stubborn partnership between Ben Stokes and Will Jacks. The 36-year-old flung himself to his left and held on to the catch just above the ground to end Jacks' resistance.

The dismissal occurred in the 67th over of the innings sent down by right-arm seamer Michael Neser. With keeper Alex Carey standing up to the stumps, Jacks, who was on 40, edged a length delivery as Smith dove full length to his left and grabbed the catch just before the ball landed on the ground. The wicket ensured that Australia broke the partnership of 96 off 221 deliveries that kept the home side at bay.

England had begun Day 4 with 43 runs behind and hadn't lost a wicket in the opening session as Jacks and Stokes dug in through to tea. Given the tourists showcasing stoic defence, it needed something special to break the partnership.

Meanwhile, Smith took two more catches as the home side bowled England out for 241, conceding a 64-run lead. In the process, Smith has also levelled with Rahul Dravid for most outfield catches in Test cricket with 210. Hence, the hosts need 65 runs to take a 2-0 lead in the five-Test rubber.

Australia finished Day 3 on top by reducing the Englishmen to 134/6 after amassing 511 in response to England's first-innings total of 334, spearheaded by Joe Root's ton. Australia won the opening Test in Perth Stadium by eight wickets, with the game finishing in two days after Travis Head bludgeoned an 83-ball 123.

With 65 to get, the Aussies will back themselves to go 2-0 up.
