Ravindra Jadeja failed to deliver with the bat in the second innings of the first Test between India and South Africa at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday, November 16. The left-handed batter departed for 18 runs off 26 balls, lbw by Simon Harmer, leaving India in a spot of bother at 64/5.
The dismissal came in the 28th over of India’s run chase. Harmer bowled a flighted delivery from around the wicket that dipped on the batter. The left-handed batter was hit on the toe, failing to make the most of the half-volley. The 36-year-old looked shocked and immediately went for the DRS review after the on-field umpire gave him out. Much to his surprise, the replays showed the ball would’ve crashed into the stumps.

Jadeja bailed out India on multiple occasions during the five-match Test series in England earlier this year. He, however, failed to rescue India in the series opener against the Proteas at home. Meanwhile, Simon Harmer continued his red-hot form after scalping 12 wickets in a two-match Test series in Pakistan, which ended in a 1-1 draw. The off-spinner bagged a four-fer in the first essay against India.

A clinical bowling display from Simon Harmer has helped South Africa dominate India in the first Test. They are favorites to win the series opener.
At the time of writing, India were 77/7, with Jasprit Bumrah and Axar Patel at the crease. Harmer has been the leading wicket-taker with four wickets. Earlier, Marco Jansen dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul for 0 and 1, respectively.
The Men in Blue need 47 runs to win the match. On the other hand, the Proteas need only two wickets as skipper Shubman Gill is unavailable due to a stiff neck. World Test Champions South Africa last won a Test in India in 2010.
Earlier in the day, skipper Temba Bavuma scored an unbeaten 55 to help the tourists post 153 in their second innings. Corbin Bosch also chipped in with a valuable 25.
The second Test between the two teams is scheduled to be played in Guwahati, beginning on November 22.
