The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued a major update on Shubman Gill ahead of the second Test against South Africa in Guwahati, beginning on November 22. The 26-year-old will travel to Guwahati with the team, but the decision on whether he'd play will be made later.

India were left one batter short in both innings of the opening Test at Eden Gardens due to Gill's neck injury. The incident occurred after the right-hander faced only three deliveries in the first innings before walking off. He had to be subsequently admitted to a private hospital. Gill didn't come out to bat in the second dig either as India failed to chase down a 124-run target, falling short by 30 runs.

Below is the statement issued by the BCCI:

"Team India captain Shubman Gill suffered a neck injury on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test against South Africa and was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of day's play. He was kept under observation and discharged the next day. Shubman has been responding well to the medical treatment provided and will travel to Guwahati with the team on 19th November, 2025. He will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team and a decision on his participation in the 2nd Test will be taken accordingly."

The home side could yet again be without their regular captain as Shubman Gill might not recover in time for the Guwahati Test.

Rishabh Pant, who captained in Kolkata, will fill in again in the role if Gill fails to recover for the second Test. The keeper-batter did a promising job to restrict South Africa's lead to 123, but he could not get the job done with the bat.

The southpaw will find himself under massive pressure as India look to avoid a second home series defeat in a year. The hosts also need to slot in a middle-order batter if the regular captain fails to recover from his neck injury.
