Team India star Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the second Test against South Africa, as per a report by The Indian Express. The second Test is set to begin on Saturday, November 22, in Guwahati.
Shubman Gill had suffered a neck injury while batting on the second day of the first Test in Kolkata. He retired hurt on four runs off three balls in the first innings and did not take the field for the remainder of the Test. He was taken to a hospital after the conclusion of play on the second day.
Gill was discharged on day three of the first Test. The BCCI stated that the 26-year-old responded well to the medical treatment and would travel with the team to Guwahati. It added that he would be monitored, and a call on his participation in the second Test would be taken later on.
"Team India captain Shubman Gill suffered a neck injury on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test against South Africa and was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of day’s play. He was kept under observation and discharged the next day. Shubman has been responding well to the medical treatment provided and will travel to Guwahati with the team on 19th November, 2025," the statement read.
Gill was also seen with the team at the airport as they arrived in Guwahati on Wednesday, November 19. However, according to the report, he has now been ruled out and will not take part in the game beginning Saturday.
India missed his services with the bat in the Test. As he walked out, retired hurt, they managed to score 159 runs in the first innings. In the second innings, they were bowled out for 93 chasing 124 and were a batter short.
Rishabh Pant to lead in Shubman Gill's absence
The report added that Rishabh Pant will lead the team in Shubman Gill's absence. Notably, Pant took over captaincy duties even in the first Test after Gill had left the field. He was named vice-captain when the squad for the series was announced.
The first Test marked Pant's return to international cricket after he was out of action following the injury he sustained in England. During the fourth Test in Manchester, he fractured his right foot and was ruled out of the fifth and final Test.
The report also mentioned that left-handed batter Sai Sudharsan is likely to replace Shubman Gill in the playing 11 for the Guwahati Test. Having lost the first match, it is a must-win game for India to draw the two-match series.
