Iyer suffered a spleen laceration after taking a diving catch in the third ODI. The 30-year-old was rushed to the hospital for scans. Reports suggested that it was a life-threatening injury, and he was admitted to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in Sydney.

Much to the delight of his fans, Iyer has started training and recently posted an Instagram story of his workout session.

India lost the three-match ODI series against Australia 1-2. Shreyas Iyer was dismissed for 11 (24 balls) in the first fixture. He hit an impressive half-century in the subsequent match, scoring 61 runs off 77 deliveries.

He did not bat in the third ODI, where India claimed a consolation win by chasing the 237-run target with nine wickets in hand. Rohit Sharma (121* off 125 balls) and Virat Kohli (74* off 81 balls) were the top performers with the bat in the clash.

Shreyas Iyer is ruled out of India's upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa

Shreyas Iyer is expected to be out of action for at least a few months. The ODI vice-captain will miss India's upcoming three-match home series against South Africa.

It is worth noting that ODI skipper Shubman Gill has also been ruled out of the rubber due to a neck injury. With both the captain and the vice-captain missing the series, the selectors appointed senior batter KL Rahul as the stand-in captain.

The series kicks off at JSCA International Stadium Complex, Ranchi, on Sunday, November 30. The second and third ODIs will be played at Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium, Raipur (December 3), and Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, Visakhapatnam (December 6), respectively.

Following the three 50-over games, the two sides will compete in a five-match T20I series, beginning December 9, at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack.
