Rohit Sharma returned to international cricket after a seven-month absence, and was dismissed for eight runs in his first outing for India since the 2025 Champions Trophy Final. However, he made amends in the latter part of the series, scoring a gritty fifty in the second ODI at the Adelaide Oval, followed by an unbeaten match-winning hundred in the third ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).

He becomes the fifth Indian batter to reach the summit after Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, MS Dhoni, and Sachin Tendulkar. The veteran had achieved his career-high rating of 882 while being ranked No.2 in the world midway through his illustrious 2019 ODI World Cup campaign in England.

The Hitman was named player of the series after ending as the leading run-scorer, with 202 runs in three matches at an average of 101. Ahead of the Australia tour, he was ranked No.3 in the standings, placed behind Shubman Gill and Afghanistan's Ibrahim Zadran.

Shubman Gill drops down two places to occupy the No.3 slot in the rankings, with a rating of 745. The newly-appointed India ODI skipper had a horrendous series against Australia, finishing with only 43 runs in three matches at an average of 14.33.

Virat Kohli drops down one place to No.6 in ICC ODI Rankings for Batters amid Rohit Sharma's rise

While Rohit Sharma's return to international cricket propels him to the top of the rankings, Virat Kohli faces a slight demotion by one spot. The ace batter recorded consecutive ducks to mark his return after being dismissed by Mitchell Starc and Xavier Bartlett in Perth and Adelaide, respectively.

However, he found his rhythm during the run chase in the third ODI in Sydney, recording an unbeaten 74 off 81 deliveries. The former captain has been displaced by New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell, who recently smashed an unbeaten fifty in New Zealand's win over England in the second ODI.

Virat Kohli is now ranked at No.6 with a rating of 725, only marginally ahead of the seventh-ranked Charith Asalanka of Sri Lanka.
