Former Indian all-rounder believes Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are enjoying each other's successes more than ever at the twilight of their respective careers. The duo have been involved in two match-winning partnerships for India in their last three ODIs.

While Rohit scored a century and Kohli a half-century in the final ODI of the recent Australian tour, the roles reversed in the opening game of the ongoing South African ODI series. The pair retired from T20Is and Tests at a similar time over the last year and a half, remaining active in only the ODI format for India.

Talking about the legendary duo head of the third ODI against the Proteas, Pathan said on his YouTube channel (6:55):

"India's two big guns, Virat and Rohit, are in terrific form. So they'll be expected to deliver the goods in the decider and win India the series. But the thing I am noticing most with both is I have never seen them enjoying each other's cricket more. It's not that they didn't before, but now it feels like there is a purpose to it. And that's exactly what they've in mind for the 2027 World Cup."

He continued:

"When Rohit Sharma scored a century and the way Virat Kohli was celebrating it, it was visible how much Kohli enjoyed it. Likewise, when Virat Kohli scored his century in the first ODI, the way Rohit Sharma in the dressing room was excited and waiting in anticipation showed he was celebrating his partner's success so much. This is also great for Indian cricket."

After registering three consecutive 50+ scores, Rohit fell for only 14 in the second South African ODI. Meanwhile, Kohli has scored centuries in each of the first two ODIs against the Proteas.

"He's in that kind of form and mindset, and he's also extremely hungry" - Irfan Pathan on Virat Kohli

Irfan Pathan backed Virat Kohli to complete a hat-trick of centuries in the final ODI against South Africa in Visakhapatnam on December 6. The champion batter has been in breathtaking form in the series, extending his record ODI century tally to 53.

Pathan also hailed Kohli for carrying ODI cricket on his shoulders at a time when the format is fading among fans and even pundits.

"Can Virat Kohli score a hattrick of centuries? Hattricks are not for everyone. It's difficult to achieve that but Virat Kohli is capable of doing it. He's in that kind of form and mindset and he's also extremely hungry. There was a time when Virat Kohli was carrying Test cricket on his shoulders. Now he's doing the same with ODI cricket. The crowds we see in ODI cricket is commendable," said Pathan (via the aforementioned source).

He added:

"Yet as a commentator, T20 has spoilt everyone so much that if you ask a commentator what they enjoy most, they'll say T20. ODI cricket is very long but it went unnoticed in these two ODIs with full houses and people came to see Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. But because of this, Virat Kohli's responsibility is also more. Yet I believe even with this responsibility, Kohli will complete his third consecutive century."

Pathan concluded by hailing Kohli for countering the Proteas' contrasting plans in the first two ODIs.

"In the first two ODIs, Virat Kohli has countered different plans in each game. In the first match, he smashed seven sixes and two in the powerplay enroute to his century. In the second ODI, when South Africa's plans and bowling was better, he hit only two sixes yet scored a century off 93 deliveries with a strike rate of over 100. There is no one better than him in performing across conditions and circumstances in ODI cricket," he stated.

Kohli has achieved the century hat-trick once in ODIs against the West Indies in 2018. Despite his ongoing heroics against the Proteas, the three-match series is tied at one apiece.
