Mohammed Siraj entered the wickets tally by making the most of the new ball during fag end of Day 1 of the second Test between India and South Africa in Guwahati on Saturday, November 22. The speedster dismissed Tony de Zorzi for 28 runs off 59 balls to reduce the Proteas to 246/6.

The dismissal came in the 82nd over of South Africa’s first innings. Siraj landed a length ball slightly outside off that seamed away after pitch. Zorzi looked in two minds, poking it at the last second. India’s stand-in captain Rishabh Pant dived to his left to collect it with both hands. With the wicket, Siraj also ended a 45-run partnership between de Zorzi and Senuran Muthuswamy, which lasted 83 deliveries.

Mohammed Siraj provides a late strike, but South Africa make the most of Day 1 in the 2nd Test

Mohammed Siraj took a wicket to pull India back into the game, but South Africa looked flawless with the bat on Day 1. Openers Aiden Markram (38) and Ryan Rickelton (35) provided a firm start before Jasprit Bumrah broke the 82-run stand before tea. Kuldeep Yadav then saw the back of Rickelton immediately at the beginning of the second session.

Tristan Stubbs (49) and skipper Temba Bavuma (41) then stitched the highest partnership of the series, adding 84 runs for the third wicket. Ravindra Jadeja then dismissed Bavuma as Yashasvi Jaiswal completed a regulation catch before Kuldeep struck twice to remove Stubbs and Wiaan Mulder (13) within a span of six overs. Later, Mohammed Siraj finished the day on a positive note for the Men in Blue before bad lights stopped play.

The Proteas are leading the two-match series 1-0 following their 30-run win against India in the first Test held in Kolkata. It was their first Test win in India since their victory in 2010. South Africa will now look to script history by winning the series 2-0. On the other hand, India will look to bounce back and draw the series 1-1, avoid another home series loss under Gautam Gambhir’s coaching after a 0-3 clean sweep by New Zealand.
