Marco Jansen gave South Africa a dream start against India on Day 3 of the first Test at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday, November 16. The speedster dismissed openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul, both caught behind by wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne. Jaiswal departed for a duck, while Rahul managed one run.
The dismissals came in the 1st and 3rd over of India’s run chase. Jansen first bowled a short and wide delivery that landed on the pitch and seamed away. Jaiswal had angled his bat towards mid-off and got a nick before the ball carried to the wicketkeeper. It was the first duck for Jaiswal at home.
Jansen began his next over with a back-of-a-length ball that rushed into Rahul. The right-handed batter was looking for an aggressive shot and couldn’t remove his bat on time. Like in Jaiswal’s case, the ball took an outside edge, this time high on the bat, and Verreynne did the rest.

Marco Jansen puts South Africa on top of India in the opening Test
A clinical bowling display from Marco Jansen helped South Africa dominate India in the first Test. That came after the Proteas set up a 124-run target for the hosts. Captain Temba Bavuma led by example, scoring an unbeaten 55 off 136 balls, comprising four boundaries. Corbin Bosch also played a handy knock of 25 runs.
Ravindra Jadeja emerged as the leading wicket-taker for India, finishing with figures of 4/50, while Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav bagged two wickets apiece.
At the time of writing, the Men in Blue were 10/2 at Lunch on Day 3, with Dhruv Jurel and Washington Sundar at the crease. Notably, regular skipper Shubman Gill will not bat (ruled out due to a neck spasm).
Notably, India’s highest successful chase at Eden Gardens in Tests is 120, which they achieved against the Proteas in 2004. As a result, World Test Champions South Africa will be looking to put their best foot forward to give themselves a chance to win their first Test match in India since 2010. The tourists recently drew a two-match Test series in Pakistan 1-1.
