Team India coach Gautam Gambhir finds himself firmly under the spotlight after a 2-0 home drubbing at the hands of South Africa. With Gambhir coming under heavy scrutiny due to his tactics and team combination, he defended himself in the post-series presser by reminding that India won the Champions Trophy and Asia Cup this year under his watch.

But a recent clip has surfaced where the ex-cricketer has cited team effort behind winning the Champions Trophy. In the clip now surfaced on social media, the 44-year-old had told ABP News earlier this year:

"Maine Champions Trophy nahin jeeti. Yeh maine nahin jeeti, kisi captain ne nahin jeeti, kisi player ne nahin jeeti. Hum sabne milke jeeti. Koi coach captain, koi junior player, koi senior player, aapko koi trophy nahin jeeta sakta. (I didn't win the Champions Trophy. I didn't win it, neither did any particular captain or player. We won it collectively. No captain, junior or senior player can alone win the trophy for any country.)"

Nevertheless, the former cricketer drew backlash for seemingly claiming all the credit for the Champions Trophy victory. He stated, as quoted by ESPN Cricinfo:

"I'm the same guy who got results in England as well, with a young team. And I'm sure you guys will forget very soon because a lot of people keep talking about New Zealand. And I'm the same guy under whom [we] won Champions Trophy and Asia Cup as well."

The series loss to South Africa comes nearly a year after New Zealand got the better of the Asian Giants 3-0 in their backyard. Before the defeat to the Kiwis, India hadn't lost a home Test series since 2012.

Despite all the criticism, the BCCI are unlikely to take any knee-jerk action for now, claiming that the 44-year-old's contract runs until 2027. Nevertheless, a few sources told NDTV that he will be questioned on how to handle the Test team amid the transition.

"We are not looking to replace Gautam Gambhir at the moment. He is rebuilding a team. His contract runs till the 2027 World Cup. There will be a meeting between team management and selectors at the end of the South Africa tour. Gambhir will be asked how to pick up the test team's performance while transitioning," the source told NDTV.

The Men in Blue are gearing up to face South Africa in the three-game ODI series, beginning on November 30, in Ranchi.
