Team India pacer Deepak Chahar's sister Malti Chahar made a massive revelation about a birthday rule in their family. Malti appeared in an interview with 'Filmygyan', where she opened up on how they never celebrated birthdays for a long time.
Malti revealed that their father had made a rule that they would not celebrate birthdays or any festivals until Deepak Chahar made his debut for India.
"Maine apna birthday kabhi celebrate nahi kiya. Mere ghar mai mujhe aur mere bhai ko aadat nahi hai. Paapa ne ek rule banaya tha bachpan mai ki hum birthday celebrate nahi karenge jab tak Deepak India nahi khel leta. Na birthdays na Diwali, koi festival bhi celebrate nahi hota tha. Toh humara 10-15 saal ka struggle tha, humari aadat chutt gayi birthday manane ki," she said.
("I have never celebrated my birthday. In our house, both my brother and I do not have the habit. My father had made a rule in childhood that we would not celebrate birthdays until Deepak played for India. No birthdays, no Diwali, we would not celebrate any festival as well. It was a struggle for 10-15 years, and we lost the habit of celebrating birthdays.")
The moment finally came in July 2018 when Deepak Chahar made his first international appearance. It was a T20I against England at Bristol. In the same year, in September, he also made his ODI debut against Afghanistan at Dubai.
Deepak Chahar has been out of the Indian team since 2023
Deepak Chahar has played 13 ODIs and 25 T20Is so far. He has bagged 16 wickets and 31 wickets in each format, respectively. However, he has been out of the Indian team since 2023. He last played an ODI in 2022 and a T20I in 2023.
The pacer has been out largely due to constant injuries. During the period where he has been out, other pacers like Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana, among others, have come in. Therefore, making a comeback anytime soon seems far more difficult for him at the moment.
Moreover, he played only 18 games in two seasons (2023 and 2024) in the IPL, missing out due to injury. While he played all 14 matches in 2025, he was not as effective. He picked up 11 wickets at an average of 34.18 and an economy of 9.17.
Deepak is currently playing domestic cricket for Rajasthan. The pacer will have to keep performing consistently and maintain his fitness to remain in contention for a comeback.
