The hosts replaced all-rounder Washington Sundar with batter Tilak Varma, going with an extra pure batter. Sundar played the first two matches of the series. In the first game, he scored 13 runs off 19 balls batting at number five. He bowled just three overs and returned figures of 0/18.

In the second game, Sundar batted at six and made just one run off eight balls. He bowled only four overs and returned figures of 0/28. Tilak Varma had played only four ODIs before the ongoing contest. He has scored 68 runs and has not had a standout performance in the format yet.

The left-hander made his ODI debut against Bangladesh in 2023. Interestingly, his last game in the format before this was also against South Africa in 2023.
