Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar gifted football great Lionel Messi his 2011 World Cup-winning jersey during Messi's GOAT India tour. As a part of the tour, Messi arrived in Mumbai at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, December 14.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup-winning captain of Argentina and an eight-time Ballon d'Or winner stopped in Mumbai after visits to Kolkata and Hyderabad during his tour. As the two legends met, Tendulkar presented his signed 2011 World Cup-winning jersey to Lionel Messi.

The two posed for a picture while Tendulkar presented him with the jersey, and they were all smiles. Fans at the Wankhede Stadium erupted in chants of 'Sachin' as well. Tendulkar could be seen in a black shirt with shades and white pants, while Messi wore a plain white shirt.

Moreover, Lionel Messi also presented his Argentina jersey to the Indian football legend Sunil Chhetri, who was present at the Wankhede for the event. Messi had a fun time as he even scored an exhibition penalty and kicked the ball to the crowd at the iconic stadium. The fans went berserk as he walked around the ground and waved at them. They were also seen wearing his Argentina jersey in the stands.

Luis Suárez and Rodrigo De Paul were also present with Messi at the Wankhede during his GOAT India tour.


Lionel Messi inaugurates Project Maha-Deva

During his presence at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Lionel Messi also inaugurated the Project Maha-Deva of the Maharashtra Government. It is a grassroots football program.

The initiative, which is a five-year program backed by the state, will aim to bring about a change in the process of identifying young footballers. It will bring in a proper model and training program that will help them prepare for international pathways.

Western India Football Association (technical expertise, scouting and assessment), MITRA & VSTF (administrative and academic support), CIDCO (infrastructure), and the Department of Sports (coordination and policy implementation) will help in the running of the project.

The project will oversee the scouting of aspiring footballers from the state and give them access to training in FIFA-accredited academies.
