IND vs SA 2025: When was the last time South Africa won a Test series in India before this?

South Africa have comprehensively outplayed Team India in their own backyard, registering a 2-0 victory in the two-Test series, stunning the home side across facets. With Temba Bavuma in charge, the Proteas have registered a series victory on Indian soil after 25 years, the last one coming in 2000.

The series victory in 2000 came under Hansie Cronje when South Africa had registered a nervy four-wicket win at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium in the opening game. The second and final Test at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru saw the hosts succumbing to an innings defeat, as the tourists made 479 following the home side's first-innings total of 158. Although Mohammad Azharuddin scored a fighting ton in the second innings, it couldn't prevent an innings and 71-run defeat.

Meanwhile, Bavuma and company defended a mere 123 in the opening Test in Kolkata this year, bowling India out for 93 to take a 1-0 lead. As for the second Test in Guwahati, the Proteas piled on 489 in the first innings and took a 288-run lead after bowling the Asian Giants out for 201. They batted again and set 549 for the hosts to win. However, India were bundled out for just 140, losing by 408 runs.

At the presentation ceremony, Bavuma credited their preparation before the series and the confidence that anyone can contribute massively on a given day. The veteran believes the series victory will only elevate their confidence.

"It's massive. For me personally being out of the game for a couple of months for injury. It's not everyday you can think of coming to India and win 2-0. As a group we've had top days and we know how tough we can be. It's another incredible achievement for us. This answers some questions that were posed to us as a group. Big shift in our mindset in terms of what we want to do out there and adapt accordingly," he said.

"Our preparation was apt, the guys were clear on their roles, as a unit the biggest thing was guys wanting to contribute. There was a strong sense that anyone can contribute on their day, even guys coming from the bench like Muthusamy. As a team we're in a good space and it will grow our confidence even more," he added.

Simon Harmer was named Player of the Series for his 17 scalps.
