Former Indian opener Kris Srikkanth dismissed the notion that the side needed more runs after failing to defend 358 in the second ODI against South Africa in Raipur. With heavy dew setting in, the hosts were unable to trouble the Proteas' batting lineup as they completed the run chase in the final over. Despite the massive final total, the hosts scored only 74 runs in their final 11 overs, even after being only three wickets down. While skipper KL Rahul scored a breezy 43-ball 66 in the end, the spin-bowling all-rounders, Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja, combined for only 25 off their 35 deliveries. When asked if India left a few runs out there in the end, Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel (1:11):"Asking for more would be greedy. How much more than 358 do you need? If one says another 20 runs, then India'll probably need 500. The Indians batted brilliantly. KL Rahul played a great hand in the end. Maybe India could have scored ten extra runs if Jadeja scored 30 or 35 off his 27 balls. But 358 is a huge, huge total."He continued:"Yes, the problem is dew is a huge factor. We keep talking in hindsight that another ten runs could have been useful or Ravindra Jadeja, KL Rahul or Washington Sundar could have done more. But everything has been compensated. Despite Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal not contributing, India scored so much."The 359 was the joint-highest score chased down against India in an ODI after Australia achieved the same in Mohali in 2019."Without him, India will struggle" - Kris Srikkanth on Jasprit BumrahKris Srikkanth believes India's second ODI defeat to the Proteas highlighted the importance of Jasprit Bumrah and Varun Chakaravarthy. The former captain was particularly unimpressed with India leaving out the latter in ODIs despite his stellar showing in the Champions Trophy earlier in the year."Bumrah has been rested for this series. But without him, India will struggle. Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana bowl well in patches. They both are on and off, bowl well at times but get clobbered the other times. It goes both ways with both of them. Arshdeep bowled brilliantly today," said Srikkanth (via the aforementioned source). He added:"But Varun Chakaravarthy won India the Champions Trophy. He bowled very well there but after that he's not playing in ODIs at all. He has to play, I am not sure why he's not playing. If you ask they'll say how many spinners can we play. But it's compulsory he plays in the 11. He proved he's a brilliant match-winner in the Champions Trophy. He has to come into the play now, hopefully for the New Zealand ODIs."India also conceded 332 to South Africa in the series opener despite having them reeling at 11/3. However, they managed to complete a 17-run win after scoring 349 with the bat.
