West Indies recorded their first set of points in the 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) tally after a historic draw in the series opener against New Zealand at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch. The Men in Maroon batted out for 163.3 overs in the fourth innings while hunting down a 531-run target to avoid defeat and end a string of five successive losses in the ongoing cycle.
The Roston Chase-led side had come into the series against the Blackcaps after successive demoralising cleansweeps against Australia and India. They were placed eighth in the points table with a PCT of 0 as they had no wins or draws to their name at that point.
However, the team made a massive statement by salvaging a draw after being bowled out for 167 in the first innings, and being reduced to 72-4 in the mammoth fourth innings run chase as well. Shai Hope's resilient hundred kept West Indies alive ahead of the final day, while Justin Graves' double ton and Kemar Roach's stunning blockathon meant that New Zealand failed to be among the wickets.

With the win, they now have four points to their name, but still remain at the bottom of the table with a PCT of 5.56.
The clash against the West Indies was New Zealand's opening match of the cycle. The inaugural winners enter the table in the seventh position after the draw, with a PCT of 33.33. This also marked the Blackcaps' first home Test draw since 2019. Seddon Park in Hamilton had last witnessed a drawn Test in the country during England's tour in 2019.
The second Test between New Zealand and West Indies is scheduled to begin on December 10
West Indies' heroic effort in Christchurch has set up an excellent tone for the rest of the three-match series. The Men in Maroon had been outplayed in the white-ball leg of the tour, losing all eight matches. However, they now have a chance to unsettle the Blackcaps on their own turf.
The second Test between the two sides will take place at the Basin Reserve in Wellington from December 10 onwards. West Indies' last Test win in New Zealand had come at the very same venue in 1995, where they won by an innings and 322 runs.
