New Zealand registered their first win of the 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) in the second Test of the three-match home series against the West Indies. The Blackcaps emerged victorious by nine wickets in Wellington after having had to settle for a draw in the series opener in Christchurch recently.
Brilliant spells by Blair Tickner and debutant Michael Rae helped New Zealand skittle out the visitors for 205 in the first innings. In reply, the hosts claimed a 73-run lead, courtesy of fifties by Devon Conway and Mitchell Hay. Despite not having the services of the injured Tickner in the second innings, New Zealand bundled out West Indies for a paltry 128, with Jacob Duffy picking up a five-wicket haul in the process.

New Zealand chased down the paltry target in just 10 overs early on Day 3 to wrap up a solid outing. The win pushes them to the fourth spot with a PCT of 66.67, they were earlier placed sixth after beginning their cycle with a draw. In the process, the inaugural winners have overtaken India and Pakistan in the points table.
West Indies, on the other hand, return to losing ways after recently opening their account with the draw in the first Test. Suffering cleansweeps against both Australia and India in the early stages of the cycle, the Men in Maroon remain at the bottom of the standings. Their PCT also drops to 4.76 from 5.56.
The third Test between New Zealand and West Indies will begin on December 18
The visitors still have a chance to salvage the series in the form of a third and final Test, scheduled to begin on Thursday, December 18 at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.
New Zealand will have to get through the series while managing an injury crisis on the sidelines. The trio of Matt Henry, Nathan Smith, and Mitchell Santner have already been ruled out of the series.
