Veteran all-rounder Andre Russell announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Sunday, November 30, after recently being released by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) ahead of the upcoming mini auction. The 37-year-old is set to join the three-time winners as their Power Coach for the 2026 season.

Andre Russell had a glittering career in the IPL, establishing himself as one of the most destructive and impactful all-rounders that the competition has seen in its history. He began his IPL career with the Delhi Daredevils (now renamed as Delhi Capitals), before switching to Purple and Gold in 2014.

In his stint with KKR, which lasted over a decade, he won silverware and was a vital cog as their force in the lower middle-order. He played a pivotal role during the franchise's title win in the 2024 season, ending their 10-year wait for a trophy.

Andre Russell formally announced his exit from the IPL as a player with an emotional post on Instagram, where he expressed his gratitude and excitement for his new role with the franchise.

"Hanging up my IPL boots… but not the swagger. What a ride it’s been in the IPL — 12 seasons of memories, and a whole lot of love from the KKR family. I’ll still be smashing sixes and taking wickets in every other league around the world. And the best part? I’m not leaving home… you’ll see me in a new role, in KKR’s Support Staff, as the POWER COACH of 2026. New chapter. Same energy. Forever a Knight," the player posted.

Andre Russell had announced his T20I retirement earlier this year in July during the home T20I series against Australia. The all-rounder recently featured in the Trinbago Knight Riders' victorious campaign in the 2025 Caribbean Premier League, and is currently involved in the Abu Dhabi T10.

Andre Russell scored 2651 runs and took 123 wickets in the IPL

The Caribbean ace leaves behind a rich history after establishing himself as one of the most feared players in the league. His 2651 runs across 115 innings in the competition came at a stunning strike rate of 174.18. Over the course of his IPL career, he struck 223 sixes, which is the seventh highest in the leaderboard.

He also holds the second highest career strike rate in IPL history, and the highest among players to have atleast 50 appearances.

With the ball, Russell had earned a reputation as a partnership breaker and also a reliable death bowler. He wraps up his IPL tenure as KKR's second-highest wicket taker, and highest among pacers. The right-arm seam bowler picked up 124 wickets at an average of 22.08 and an economy rate of 9.38.
