India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal opened up about his celebration with Virat Kohli during the third and final ODI against South Africa on December 6 in Visakhapatnam. Chasing 271, India won by nine wickets, with Jaiswal scoring his maiden ODI hundred.
He was named Player of the Match for his unbeaten 116 off 121 balls, but it was his celebration after reaching the milestone alongside Kohli that went viral.
The 23-year-old appeared on Agenda AajTak 2025 on Wednesday, December 10, where he was asked to share the story behind the celebration. The southpaw revealed that Kohli performed a few steps from Salman Khan's popular song 'Lagan Lagi' and asked him to join in. Jaiswal said:
“There is this song that goes 'lagan lagan,' and paaji (Virat Kohli) was doing the steps and also told me to do the same. I said, 'Okay, I will do it.' That moment was really very nice. Paaji's sense of humour is unbelievable. Whenever he is around, I have so much fun. He picks things up very quickly, and it is always enjoyable being with him.”
Meanwhile, with the win, the hosts sealed the three-match series 2-1.
Yashasvi Jaiswal shares insights he received from Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma during the 3rd ODI
In the same interaction, Yashasvi Jaiswal also revealed that during the Visakhapatnam ODI, his opening partner and former captain Rohit Sharma advised him to stay calm while he himself took the risks. He added that while batting with Virat Kohli, their focus was on finishing the game together. He said:
“It was all very special. When I started my innings, I was a little nervous because I had played only two matches before this. I was trying to convert my start. If you see, Rohit bhai talked to me a lot. He was explaining how I could play, what I could do. I was under pressure too because quite a few dot balls were happening, and I also had to think about keeping the run rate good. He told me, 'You play calmly till I tell you. I will take the risks.' You can see how big-hearted he is. He was taking more risks and wanted me to just keep batting and settling. Later, once the ball started coming nicely onto my bat, I could start controlling the run rate.”
“And then when paaji (Virat Kohli) came, he was doing the same, telling me to keep playing, giving me small targets, telling me how we would focus from here and finish the match. The mindset was clear: we have to win the match for India. We kept thinking how deep we could bat and make sure we finish the game. So yes, it was a very special moment for me, extremely special. It will always stay in my mind. Of course, it was my first ODI hundred, so I enjoyed it a lot,” he added.
Rohit (75 off 73) and Kohli (65* off 45) were instrumental in India’s win, complementing Jaiswal’s innings.
