Former Indian opener Kris Srikkanth slammed the side's batting order despite their opening ODI win over South Africa in Ranchi. The Men in Blue posted a massive 349/8 in their 50 overs and prevailed by 17 runs to claim a 1-0 series lead.

However, veteran wicketkeeper batter KL Rahul batted at No. 6, with all-rounder Washington Sundar batting ahead of him at No. 5. The latter struggled, scoring only a 19-ball 13, even as Rahul essayed a brilliant 56-ball 60.

Talking about Rahul's batting position after the game, Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel (5:54):

"I don't know about Washington Sundar going ahead of him. If KL Rahul had batted higher in the order, it would have been better for India. He should never go below 5. Yes, it was a successful move in the Champions Trophy. But I don't think you should make it a habit. He should be batting at No. 4 or 5. Washington Sundar can go as a finisher rather than coming in at No. 5."

He added:

"Classy Rolls Royce Rahul, India can't do without him. He scored his 60 with effortless ease. Once he struck that six off Burger, he was unstoppable. But I don't understand why KL Rahul comes into bat at No. 6. He should be batting at No. 4 or 5, not beyond that. I don't understand this logic at all."

Rahul has predominantly batted at No. 6 for India in ODIs this year, with nine out of his 10 innings coming at the position.

"They did the job silently without making noise about it" - Kris Srikkanth on the KL Rahul-Ravindra Jadeja partnership

Kris Srikkanth hailed the sixth-wicket stand between KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja in the opening South African ODI. Despite India being well-placed at 276/5 in the 43rd over, the duo provided the final impetus with a 65-run stand off just 36 deliveries.

"His (Jadeja) knock of 29 from 17 balls went unnoticed. He also actually played at a different level. The final KL Rahul-Jadeja partnership was outstanding but went unnoticed. That was a key and both clobbered the bowling given their strike rates in the partnership. Nobody saw that effect because everything was overshadowed by Virat Kohli's knock. They did the job silently without making noise about it," said Srikkanth (via the aforementioned source).

However, Srikkanth was disappointed with Ruturaj Gaikwad for his tame dismissal in his first game for India in over a year.

"He (Gaikwad) has gotten out many times like this to that outside off-stump line. He hits it in the air while playing the square drive. This was not the first time, so that's a correction he has to make also," he stated.

With the injuries to Shreyas Iyer and Hardik Pandya, Gaikwad batted at No.4 in the opening ODI but scored only a 14-ball eight.
