India suffered a humiliating 408-run loss against South Africa in the second Test of the two-match series in Guwahati on Wednesday, November 27. It was an embarrassing defeat as they were also whitewashed 0-2, having lost the first Test in Kolkata.

Chasing a mammoth 549-run target in the final innings, the hosts entered the fifth day with eight wickets remaining. However, they failed to show enough resistance to draw the game, being bundled out for just 140 runs in 63.5 overs. The 408-run loss was also their biggest-ever margin of defeat by runs in Test cricket.

South Africa scripted history, winning a Test series in India for the first time after 25 years. Following the tough loss, fans slammed the hosts and the management with outrage that has sparked on social media.

"489 & 260 vs 201 & 140.The scorecard says South Africa won by 408 runs… But the truth is: Gautam Gambhir defeated India long before this match even started. Remove seniors ➝ Destroy dressing room ➝ Kill Test mindset. Result = 408-run humiliation. #INDvsSA #Shame," another user tweeted.

This was the third series whitewash for the hosts at home, following their defeats to South Africa (0-2) in 2000 and New Zealand (0-3) in 2024.

India continue to suffer at home under Gautam Gambhir in Tests

The miserable run in home Tests under Gautam Gambhir has only gotten worse with the defeat against South Africa in the second Test. This was their second whitewash at home across two consecutive years, having lost 0-3 to New Zealand in 2024 as mentioned above.

Their dominance at home has hit rock bottom under Gambhir. In seven Tests so far, they have lost five, with their only two wins coming in the previous series against the West Indies.

Post the defeat against South Africa in 2000, they had lost only two home series before losing against New Zealand in 2024. They have now dropped to the fifth position in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 standings with just four wins in nine matches.
