Former India player Parthiv Patel has opined that Tristan Stubbs fell prey to Kuldeep Yadav in South Africa's first innings of the second Test because he was looking for a single to reach his half-century. He highlighted that the Delhi Capitals (DC) batter was reading the franchise's spinner from the hand before his dismissal.

Stubbs scored 49 runs off 112 deliveries on Day 1 (Saturday, November 22) in Guwahati. South Africa ended the day at 247/6 in their first innings after Temba Bavuma had opted to bat first.

During a discussion on Star Sports, Parthiv was asked about Stubbs reading Kuldeep well before he succumbed to the left-arm wrist-spinner.

"Tristan Stubbs would have batted a lot against Kuldeep Yadav in the nets because they play for the same team, the Delhi Capitals. You can step out against a wrist-spinner only if you read him from the hand. If you don't pick a wrist-spinner from the hand and try to pick after the ball pitches, it is too late by then," the former India wicketkeeper-batter responded.

"He was not hesitating to play the big shot because he was picking the length and line very early. As far as his dismissal is concerned, I feel he was on 49, and he was seeing that one run there. It was a ball far away from him, and he went to take a single with hard hands. He went for a milestone. You had not seen that kind of defense earlier," he added.

Tristan Stubbs nicked a Kuldeep Yadav delivery to KL Rahul at slip. Before his dismissal, the right-handed batter had scored 11 runs, including a six over long-on, off his franchise teammate's bowling.

"When you try to spin the ball, it pitches farther from where the batter expects" - Parthiv Patel on Kuldeep Yadav's dismissal of Ryan Rickelton

In the same discussion, Parthiv Patel was asked about his thoughts on Kuldeep Yadav's dismissal of Ryan Rickelton.

"When you try to spin the ball, it pitches farther from where the batter expects. Then such a forced error happens. The ball dipped and because of that, he played a drive from far. I felt there was a second reason as well," he replied.

The cricketer-turned-commentator opined that a change in field settings also contributed to the South African opener's dismissal.

"When Rickelton was batting before the break, there was no fielder at silly point. However, when he came to bat after the break, a fielder was standing at silly point. That's why you hesitate a little while defending on the front foot, and you push the ball. You tried to create a play and India got success because of that," Parthiv observed.

Kuldeep Yadav had Ryan Rickelton caught behind by Rishabh Pant for an 82-ball 35. He then dismissed Tristan Stubbs before having Wiaan Mulder (13 off 18) caught by Yashasvi Jaiswal at mid-off.
