Former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar believes Virat Kohli can score 100 international centuries after his heroics in the ODI series against South Africa. Playing only the ODI format, following his T20I and Test retirements over the past year, the 37-year-old was at his relentless best with the bat in the three games against the Proteas.

Kohli scored back-to-back centuries in the opening two matches, followed by a 45-ball 65* in the series finale. The veteran batter extended his record ODI century tally to 53, while also reaching 84 international centuries.

Sitting in second place, Kohli is only behind Sachin Tendulkar, who finished his international career with a remarkable 100 centuries.

Talking about Virat Kohli's chances of tracking Tendulkar's record down, Gavaskar said on Star Sports (via India Today):

“Why not? Even if he plays for three more years, he needs 16 hundreds from here. The way he has been batting, he has scored two hundreds in a three-match series. Going forward, even if he scores two more against New Zealand in a three-match series, he will reach 87. So the chances of him getting to 100 are big, very good. The way he has been batting, he is enjoying himself."

Gavaskar added:

"See, he has a month’s break before the New Zealand ODIs. It remains to be seen what happens to his form in these few days. If that break was not there, I am sure he would score two or three hundreds in the series."

Kohli's next international assignment will be the three-match ODI series against New Zealand, starting January 11.

"Very rarely have we seen this version of Virat Kohli—the T20 avatar—in ODI cricket" - Sunil Gavaskar

Sunil Gavaskar hailed Virat Kohli for his incredible batting display in the final ODI against South Africa, mixing aggression without recklessness. With India coasting at 155/1 in their run-chase of 271, the champion batter demolished the Proteas' attack for a brutal 45-ball 65*, including three maximums.

"The way he batted today (Saturday), knowing the match was almost in India’s pocket—he knew a good foundation had been laid by the openers and that batters in good form were to follow. So he enjoyed himself in the middle. Very rarely have we seen this version of Virat Kohli—the T20 avatar—in ODI cricket," said Gavaskar (via the aforementioned source).

Gavaskar concluded:

"He played his shots from the second ball, and not one of them was reckless. Can anyone tell me whether there was an inside-edge or an outside-edge in his innings?"

Kohli finished the series with astonishing numbers of 302 runs at an average of 151 and a strike rate of over 117. He was adjudged the Player of the Series in India's 2-1 triumph.
