Team India T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav issued an assuring update regarding the hospitalized Shreyas Iyer, who suffered a gruesome rib injury while fielding during the third ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), on Saturday, October 25. The ODI vice-captain left the field immediately, and had to spend some time in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in the Sydney hospital due to internal bleeding.
Shreyas Iyer is still admitted under the supervision of doctors and the BCCI Medical Team. The governing body had officially issued a statement on Monday, October 27, where it was mentioned that the batter had a laceration on his spleen, but is recovering well.
Suryakumar Yadav also issued an update along similar lines, while adding that he has been in touch with Shreyas Iyer, which leads him to believe that he is in a stable condition.
"We spoke to him on the first day when we got to know that he was injured. I had actually called him, then I got to know that he did not have his phone with him. So, I then called out physio, Kamlesh Jain, and he told me that Shreyas is stable. I've been talking to him for the last two days, and he has been replying. If he is replying on the phone, it means that he is stable. The doctor is also there with him, so it is looking good. It is good that he is talking, it is all normal," Suryakumar Yadav said during the pre-match press conference (via RevSportz).
There is no definite timeline regarding Shreyas Iyer's potential return to competitive cricket due to the nature of his injury. Initially, it was reported that he would need three weeks to completely recover. However, given the recent run of events, it is highly likely that he might miss the upcoming home series against South Africa.
"We will take him home with us only" - Suryakumar Yadav's hilarious comment on Shreyas Iyer's recovery in Australia amid AUS vs IND 2025 T20Is
While the players only involved in the ODI series have travelled back home, Iyer has to spend some time in Australia before he can recover and be fit enough to travel the long flight back to India.
Suryakumar Yadav jokingly suggested that Iyer can link up with the T20I squad after the five-match series to make the journey back home.
"See, we are not doctors. So, when we saw from the outside, it felt normal after he took the catch. Only the ones who were there at the venue can tell this. So, they told me that when they went inside, they felt like they need to pay attention, and then he was rushed to the specialist. Doctors and physios said what happened was unfortunate. Rare things only happen to rare talents like Shreyas. BCCI is in full support, so he will recover quickly, we will take him home with us only," Suryakumar Yadav added.
Team India's T20I series against Australia will come to an end on Saturday, November 8, with the fifth match at The Gabba in Brisbane. They are then scheduled to play two Tests against South Africa from November 14 onwards, which will be followed by the white-ball leg from November 30 onwards.
