"He needs to make runs against better sides" - Murali Kartik's massive claim on Team India batter after Day 2 of IND vs SA 2025 2nd Test

Former India spinner Murali Kartik questioned whether Sai Sudharsan and some of the other Team India batters would be able to bat positively on Day 3 of the ongoing second Test against South Africa in Guwahati. The hosts are in an uncomfortable position at the end of the second day of the clash, with the Proteas amassing 489 in their first innings.

Having lost the opening game of the two-match series in Kolkata, India must win the ongoing encounter to avoid a home series defeat. However, with only three days remaining and bad light prematurely ending play on the opening two days, the Indian batters have a task on their hands to force a result.

Talking about the specific India batters and their potential mindsets on Day 3, Kartik told Cricbuzz (16:13):

"It's been a hard day for them and just looking at the playing XI too, how do you go about it? Yashasvi Jaiswal has a great Test record but not against South Africa. So is there a bit of a hangover walking in, where you think runs but also the opposition? Sai Sudharsan is back and he also needs to make runs against better sides because he lost his spot at No. 3. You've got Jurel pumped up the order because of no Shubman Gill."

He continued:

"Pant and Jadeja, you know what you're going to get from them, as with Washington Sundar, rock solid. Nitish Reddy is also coming back so they need to find a way to be in the game and if the opportunity presents itself, press forward."

Sudharsan missed the series opener and has a sub-par Test average of 30.33 in five games. A loss or a draw in the Guwahati clash would mean a second home Test series loss for India in their previous three after the embarrassing 0-3 whitewash against New Zealand last year.

"People like Jaiswal and Pant could be key" - Shaun Pollock

Former South Africa captain Shaun Pollock believes Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant could be the key for India to score at the required pace to force a result in the second Test. Yet, Pollock warned the hosts of batting too aggressively and gifting away the Test match instead of settling for a draw.

"How can India make a challenge of it in the remaining 230-240 potential overs? They are going to have to score very quickly, especially in this first innings. The surface is still good enough to do that. People like Jaiswal and Pant could be key if they could score quickly. Sai Sudharsan, you wouldn't expect too much from him because he's just trying to make his way," said Pollock (via the aforementioned source).

He concluded:

"Jadeja will be positive. KL Rahul will need to anchor the innings. It's going to be a challenge. South Africa are in pole position and don't have to force the issue. India have to make the play to level the series. In saying that, you do get points for draws. So they can't be gung-ho in their approach. Because if they do not perform and throw this Test away and South Africa get two wins, they'll gather more WTC points."

As things stand, India have reached only 9/0 in the seventh over in response to the Proteas' 489 at Stumps on Day 2.
