Team India pacer Harshit Rana gave the dangerous Dewald Brevis a fiery send-off after dismissing him in the ongoing first ODI against South Africa at the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi. The right-arm pacer pointed him to the way back to the pavilion as India struck at a crucial time in the contest.

The dismissal came in the 22nd over of the innings as Rana came on for his sixth. As Brevis tried to launch the ball over deep cover, he couldn't get a clean connection as it skewed off the outside half of his bat and flew to the deep point boundary, where Ruturaj Gaikwad took a simple catch. Brevis had hit a quick-fire 37 off only 28 deliveries, hitting two boundaries and three sixes.

The wicket also ended the 53-run stand between Brevis and Matthew Breetzke. But the South Africans made a brilliant recovery from 11-3 after Aiden Markram (7), Ryan Rickelton (0) and Quinton de Kock (0) fell cheaply in pursuit of a massive 350.

The Delhi-born pacer, meanwhile, had struck with his first ball of the innings, rearranging Rickelton's stumps, followed by having De Kock caught behind in the same over. Arshdeep went on to dismiss Markram, while Kuldeep Yadav trapped Tony de Zorzi lbw for 35. The wicket of de Zorzi was equally critical as he added 66 with Breezke in 62 deliveries.

Earlier in the day, Markram won the toss and sent the home side into bat, citing the dew factor as a reason. Virat Kohli responded with a breathtaking knock of 135 off only 120 deliveries. Rohit Sharma (57) and KL Rahul (60) chipped in with composed half-centuries to lead India to 349/8 in 50 overs.

At the time of writing, South Africa's hopes of a win took a hit as Kuldeep dismissed both Breezke and Marco Jansen in the same over to reduce them to 228-7.
