Batting first, England ended the opening day (Thursday, December 4) on 325/9 from 74 overs. Joe Root struck a brilliant ton and remained unbeaten on 135 off 202 balls. Before the Ashes 2025 began, Matthew Hayden had made a hilarious bet that he would walk naked around the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) if Root failed to score a century during the upcoming Ashes series.

As Root got to the three-figure mark, England Cricket released a video on X where Matthew Hayden congratulated Root. Fans came up with hilarious reactions on the social media platform following the same.

Root will be keen to build on his unbeaten ton when England return to bat on the second day of the ongoing second Test.

Matthew Hayden's message to Joe Root

Matthew Hayden, while congratulating Joe Root, hilariously stated that no one had more 'skin' in the game than him. However, he said that he was genuinely backing the England star to score a century.

"Congratulations mate, on a hundred here in Australia. Took you a while and there was no one that had more skin in the game than me, literally. I was backing you for a hundred in a good way. So congratulations, ten (nine) fifties and finally a hundred. You little ripper mate. Have a beauty and bloody enjoy it," he said.

Root had previously gotten close twice to scoring a Test hundred in Australia. He was dismissed for 89 at Brisbane in 2021 and 87 at Adelaide in 2013. Overall, he has five Test hundreds and 18 half-centuries against Australia in 36 games and 68 innings.
