Former Indian captain Kris Srikkanth believes Sanju Samson should have gone to the auction instead of being involved in a trade, once he was unwilling to continue with the Rajasthan Royals (RR). Srikkanth's remarks were in response to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) reportedly trading star all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran for Samson. He also dismissed CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad's wish to bat at No. 3, urging the right-hander to instead open the batting. Many believe Samson's acquisition via trade is to build a solid top three with himself, Ayush Mhatre, and Gaikwad.Talking about the move to land Samson at CSK on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth said (9:55):"He's (Samson) saying I don't want to play for RR. Then go to the auction and not be involved in a trade. Also Ruturaj Gaikwad is best suited to open the batting. That he wants to bat at No. 3 shouldn't matter. The team comes first and individuals come next."The former opener admitted that RR also suffers from the trade by losing Samson, while maintaining that replacing an all-rounder like Jadeja would be harder."RR also is a loser as Sanju has been a pillar for them in batting. But in world cricket itself, there aren't all-rounders. All-rounders are a rarity in the world. Even with the Impact Player rule, a genuine all-rounder is too valuable," he added.Samson has played 11 out of his 13 IPL seasons with RR, including his previous eight. Meanwhile, Jadeja has been an integral member of CSK since 2012, helping the franchise win three out of their five IPL titles."CSK don't have a second spinner also now" - Kris SrikkanthKris Srikkanth opposed CSK's decision to trade Ravindra Jadeja, citing their lack of a second bona fide spinner with the veteran's potential departure. Jadeja's long-time spin-bowling partner, Ravichandran Ashwin, announced his retirement from the IPL after the 2025 edition, leaving the side with only Noor Ahmad as a sure-starter among spinners."CSK don't have a second spinner also now. Someone like RCB had Suyash Sharma as a second spinner, who even turned into their main spinner often even though he didn't pick up wickets. From a team balance point of view, a world-class all-rounder is a must," said Srikkanth (via the aforementioned source). He concluded:"A team with such a player is always one step ahead in limited overs cricket. Krunal Pandya won RCB a few matches with the bat also. Hardik Pandya wins matches with bat and ball for MI. The same with Axar Patel for DC. That's why these teams are doing well."CSK and RR finished at the bottom two of the IPL 2025 points table, with the former missing the playoffs for a second consecutive season.
