Veteran India batter Virat Kohli reached his half-century with a six, earning applause from head coach Gautam Gambhir during the ongoing first ODI against South Africa. The match is being played on Sunday, November 30, in Ranchi.

The milestone came on the second ball of the 18th over of India’s innings. Corbin Bosch bowled a good-length delivery angling into the right-hander, and Kohli leaned into a wristy flick, sending it soaring over mid-wicket for his 76th ODI fifty, earning applause from Gambhir in the dressing room.

Meanwhile, India’s No. 3 continued the momentum, hitting the very next delivery for another six. Bosch bowled a back-of-a-length ball wide outside off, and Kohli used the pace, sending it over deep point for his second maximum in as many balls.

Virat Kohli-Rohit Sharma 136-run partnership strengthens India’s position in 1st ODI

Put into bat first, Yashasvi Jaiswal gave India a promising start before falling for 18 off 16 balls to Nandre Burger in the fourth over. Virat Kohli walked in at No. 3 and, alongside Rohit Sharma, began scoring with intent as the hosts reached 80/1 after 10 overs.

In the 15th over, Rohit smashed Prenelan Subrayen for consecutive sixes off the first two balls. Meanwhile, in the 18th over, Kohli hit two sixes in as many balls off Corbin Bosch, and in the process reached his fifty off 48 balls, the 76th of his ODI career.

In the following over, Rohit also reached his fifty off 43 balls, marking the 60th of his career. In the 22nd over, Marco Jansen dismissed Rohit for 57 off 51 balls, including five fours and three sixes, ending the 136-run partnership off 109 balls. At the time of writing, the hosts were 179/2 after 25 overs, with Virat Kohli (83) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (7) at the crease.
