Former legendary India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has said that head coach Gautam Gambhir has managed to leave an impact in the shortest format of the game. His remarks come ahead of the three-game ODI series against South Africa, scheduled to begin on November 30 in Ranchi.
Gambhir has been under scrutiny recently, following India’s whitewash in the two-game home Test series against the Proteas. However, speaking on Friday, November 28, in a joint YouTube video with former South Africa batter AB de Villiers, Ashwin said that Gambhir has managed to produce results in T20Is, even though his experiments with the batting order have sparked debate.
The 39-year-old asserted that he would love to see more stability in India’s batting order in the upcoming T20Is. He said:
“I should be very careful when I say this, but I would say that Gambhir has managed to leave an impact on the T20 side of things, where he has been quite experimental in terms of the batting order, which has come in for some debate. These next 10 T20Is that India will play before the T20 World Cup will give us an indication of how much of a shakeup that team is going to go through. I would love to see a lot more stability in terms of what we do with the batting lineup.”
Since taking charge in July 2024, India has played 22 T20Is under the 44-year-old, winning 20 of them, including clinching the 2025 Asia Cup.
“A lot of credit to the IPL” - R Ashwin’s massive statement on Gautam Gambhir as white-ball coach
In the same video, Ravichandran Ashwin said that Gautam Gambhir has already made a mark as India’s coach in white-ball cricket, crediting the IPL for this impact in producing some brilliant cricketers and highlighting Abhishek Sharma as an example. He said:
“I think GG, the white-ball coach, has already left a bit of a stamp. That is a lot of credit to the IPL in many ways. It has thrown up some really stunning, stunning white-ball cricketers for India, namely Abhishek Sharma. That is one cricketer I would love to watch out for again in the T20 format. His exploits around the format will also dictate where India go in the T20 World Cup. A bit of a fearless approach.”
“Once upon a time, I played for India in the T20 format and always wanted the batters to play in this fashion. It does not always happen when you are playing; it has to happen when you are retired. So I am glad it has happened. A fearless brand of cricket which we always wanted to happen,” he added.
Earlier this year, under Gautam Gambhir, India won an ICC trophy, clinching the 2025 Champions Trophy.
