The IPL 2026 auction took place in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday, December 16. While 360-plus players had been shortlisted for the mini-auction, 77 players ended up getting sold, with 29 of them being overseas cricketers. The 10 IPL franchises combined to spend ₹215.45 crore on the auction table.
As predicted by most experts, Australian all-rounder Cameron Green was the most expensive buy at the IPL 2026 auction. He was purchased by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for a whopping ₹25.20 crore. Green is now the costliest overseas cricketer in IPL history, but will be paid ₹18 crore as per the maximum fee rule.
Making use of their massive purse of ₹64.30 crore, KKR also purchased Sri Lankan fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana for ₹18 crore. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) pulled off a surprise by picking uncapped Indians Kartik Sharma and Prashant Veer for ₹14.2 crore each. Further, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) acquired the services of Liam Livingstone for ₹13 crore.

While most of the big Indian names were retained by the respective franchises ahead of the IPL 2026 auction, a few like Venkatesh Iyer and Ravi Bishnoi were released. The likes of Sarfaraz Khan and Prithvi Shaw, who were unsold at the auction last year, put them names in the pool again and were picked this time.
Iyer and Bishnoi were sold to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) for 7 crore and ₹7.2 crore respectively. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) bought leg spinner Rahul Chahar for ₹5.20 crore, while Sarfaraz and Shaw were sold at their base price of ₹75 lakh to CSK and Delhi Capitals (DC) respectively.
