Former England batter Robin Smith passed away at the age of 62 in Perth, Australia, on December 1. The England Cricket Board (ECB) announced the shocking news the following day (December 2) after confirmation with his family.Smith was one of England's best Test and ODI batters from the late 1980s to the mid-1990s. Renowned for his ability against pace bowling, the right-hander finished with an incredible international record.Smith scored 4,236 runs in 62 Tests at an impressive average of 43.67, including nine centuries and 28 half-centuries. He also enjoyed tremendous success in ODIs, finishing with 2,419 runs at an average of over 39, including four centuries, in 71 outings.A statement from the Smith family on his death read (via ecb.co.uk):"It is with the deepest and most profound sense of sadness and loss that we must announce the passing of Robin Arnold Smith, beloved father of Harrison and Margaux and cherished brother of Christopher. Robin died unexpectedly at his South Perth apartment on Monday 1st December. The cause of his death is at present unknown."The statement continued:"Robin known widely as ‘The Judge’ was originally born in South Africa in 1963 to parents John and Joy and is the younger brother to Christopher (Kippy) Smith. Robin rose to fame as one of England’s most charismatic and popular players. A brave and dashing batsman, he excelled both for Hampshire and his adopted country collecting legions of admirers and friends along the way.""Since his retirement from the game in 2004 his battles with alcohol and mental health have been well documented but these should not form the basis of speculation about the cause of death which will be determined at postmortem investigation. This is an immensely difficult period for us all whilst we try to come to terms with our bereavement, and we would therefore much appreciate consideration for our privacy by media and cricket followers alike."Robin Smith also played in the 1992 and 1996 ODI World Cups, finishing with excellent World Cup numbers, averaging 36.62 in 10 matches.Robin Smith enjoyed tremendous success against Team India across formatsRobin Smith tormented the Indian bowlers during his international career in Tests and ODIs. The former right-hander scored over 500 runs in six Tests against them at an average of 63.37, including two centuries and four half-centuries.Smith was also highly successful against the Indians in the 50-over format, averaging over 50 in 10 games with two centuries and as many half-centuries. The South African-born cricketer also boasted magnificent numbers in domestic cricket for Hampshire, finishing with a remarkable 26,155 first-class and 14,927 List-A runs.Robin Smith also occasionally rolled his arm over as a leg-spinner, picking up 17 wickets at the domestic level and bowling four overs in Tests.
