In a video that has gone viral on social media, fans asked Mr Singh about his son's marriage plans, but he downplayed the questions.

The 25-year-old has become the new face of Indian cricket, having taken over as captain in Tests and ODIs. Notably, he is also the highest run-getter in Test cricket in 2025, having aggregated 979 runs in nine completed matches at 69.92, alongside five centuries, with a best of 269.

After a quiet white-ball tour of Australia, Gill will be keen to shine in the two-Test series against South Africa. He made a bright start to the home season, peeling off 192 runs in the two-Test rubber against the West Indies at 96, with an unbeaten 129 in Delhi.

South Africa, who had won the toss and opted to bat first, made a bright start, stitching a 57-run opening stand in 10.3 overs. But the tourists failed to cash in on the promising start. Aiden Markram top-scored for them with 31.

Marco Jansen struck with the new ball to dismiss Yashasvi Jaiswal for 12, but India reached 37/1 in the 20 overs bowled by stumps. KL Rahul (13*) and Washington Sundar (6*) will resume the proceedings for India on Day 2.
