Former India keeper-batter Saba Karim has urged young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal to be a lot more judicious while playing the cut shot. Admitting that it is a productive scoring shot for the southpaw, he added that bowlers have found a way of forcing him to play false strokes.

Chasing a mammoth target of 549 on Day 4 of the second Test against South Africa in Guwahati on Tuesday, November 25, India went to stumps at 27-2 after 15.5 overs. Jaiswal was caught behind for 13 as he attempted a cut off Marco Jansen. In the first innings as well, the southpaw fell to off spinner Simon Harmer while shaping up for a cut.

During a discussion on ESPNcricinfo, Karim agreed to an observation that Jaiswal needs to have a game plan in place to reduce his dismissals while playing the cut shot. The former India stumper said:

"This proclivity of Yashasvi Jaiswal for those square cuts is hitting him very bad these days. Maybe the last four-five dismissals, even against West Indies, he was out in a similar manner. Look at what happened to Yashasvi Jaiswal at Eden Gardens. In the first innings - inside edge again, trying to cut a delivery that was too close to him.

The 58-year-old credit South Africa for having a smart game plan in place to catch Jaiswal off guard. Karim elaborated:

"Similar thing happened to him today and there is a strategy behind it too. For three overs, Marco Jansen tried to bounce him out and then sold him a dummy by bowling this delivery which is close to him. Jaiswal felt that there is some room and went for his favorite shot. So that's the kind of meticulous planning that the South African bowling attack have done against most of the Indian batters."

Apart from Jaiswal, India also lost KL Rahul (6) before stumps on Day 4. The latter was bowled by a beautifully tossed up delivery from Harmer.

"Yashasvi Jaiswal needs to be careful" - Saba Karim on Indian opener falling in similar manner in Test cricket

While elaborating further on Jaiswal's wicket in Guwahati, Karim pointed out that there has been a pattern to the manner in which he has been dismissed. He recalled that the batter got out while attempting the cut against West Indies as well. Urging the opener to be a lot more vigilant about his strokeplay, he added:

"At times, when you are growing in your career, bowlers tend to figure out some kind of a game plan - how to induce that risk from the batter and that is what has happened in the case of Yashasvi Jaiswal. Jayden Seales got him out in Ahmedabad in similar manner. Yashasvi Jaiswal needs to be careful. He needs to have more clarity and better shot selection."

In four innings against South Africa in the ongoing series, Jaiswal scored 83 runs at an average of 20.75, with a best of 58.
